General Volunteer Service Areas


Are you a proficient sewer?   We could use your help. This is a very flexible opportunity that can be done from the comfort of your home or here at Mary Free Bed. Assistance is needed with sewing walker, wheelchair, leg loops, catheter bags and fleece blankets for patients. Sewing can be done from home or at Mary Free Bed. Materials are provided. 

Clerical Assistance:

This opportunity has flexible scheduling options. Volunteers may be permanently placed in a department or assist with projects on an as needed basis. Various projects may include mailings, packet assembly, filing, alphabetizing, registration table assistance, and other clerical type duties. If a volunteer does not receive a permanent assignment, your name would be placed on the contacts list and staff would contact you directly to see if you are available when there are projects in need of help. These requests are intermittent and do not have a regular schedule.

Guest Services Greeter/Escort:

This is a wonderful positions with lots of social interaction. This opportunity consists of a 3-4 hour weekly shift with a focus on patient and visitor satisfaction. Volunteers warmly greet, direct and often escort visitors to various locations throughout the hospital. This position requires standing and walking for most of the shift.

Inpatient Pediatric Leisure Activity Room Host/Staff Support :

Do you like to work with children? This may be the perfect fit for you. This opportunity is a 3-4 hour weekly shift assisting in our Inpatient Pediatrics Department. The main focus of the volunteer is to help maintain activity areas while engaging patients and their families in leisure activities when they are not in therapy. During slower periods, the volunteer organizes toys and sanitizes the toys and other equipment as needed. The volunteer also assists staff with various tasks as needed within the department. 

Orthotics, Prosthetics and Bionics Volunteer:

This position assists staff with inventory transfers, patient assistance, clinical room preparation, escorting patients to areas within the hospital, patient satisfaction survey data entry, gathering outcomes cocumentation and volunteers will receive opportunities to observe staff for education purposes, if necessary,  as time allows.

Evening and /or Weekend Leisure Activity Volunteer:  

Do you enjoy helping people that need a good amount of assistance engage in leisure activity? This position is perfect for people who can, once trained, work independently by facilitating various leisure activities for patients in a group setting or one to one on evenings and/or weekends. Activities may include but are not liminted to: card and board games, music, movies, reading, socializing, puzzles, etc.
